Tarot Magic: Course Materials and ReadingsÂ
NOTE: The materials and readings required for each lesson will be listed in the module’s notes, so there’s no need to buy everything in advance. However, there are a few items that will be required at the start of the course, and they are noted with an asterisk.
LINKS: If a link doesn’t immediately work, please right-click and open in a separate window.Â
Notebook (Magical Diary)*
Blank notebook to chronicle your progress. A paper notebook is strongly preferred, especially one that is a little sturdier than a looseleaf. You should consider your magical diary a true magical item, not just a collection of notes.
A magical notebook doesn’t have to be covered in pentagrams or made of leather, but aesthetics are important in magic, so find one that speaks to you and feels special.
Please print out the weekly Tarot Magic Journal sheets and keep them in your notebook or in a separate folder.Â
Candles (in a number of colors and styles)
Arts and crafts
(glue, pins, Sharpie markers, string). You will be making or purchasing stands for your cards (to allow them to stand vertically). If you want to purchase a set of stands, these are inexpensive and a good size (and come in a pack of 4, which is the number needed for our work).
Herbs
Mojo bag
Incense charcoal and loose incense (for instructions, see my video)
Required Deck(s)
A Marseille-style tarot*
This will be your primary deck for magical work. Here are some recommendations. Almost any Marseille deck will do; I tprefer those reproduced from antique decks, just for aesthetic reasons and the link to earlier times, but they tend to be pricier. If you find a deck that isn't listed, let me know and I will be happy to share my opinion on its usefulness for the course. But in general, any deck with the Marseille pattern will be acceptable.Â
- CBD Tarot de Marseille
- Marseille Vintage Tarot
- Tarocchi Marsigliesi Fratelli Recchi - Oneglia, Torino 1830
- Marseille Tarot Professional Edition (these are large cards, excellent for meditation and ritual purposes. I use them when I teach in-person classes.)
A “burner” Marseille tarot* (the Tarot of Marseille mini is inexpensive and a good choice for this one, as is this borderless and inexpensive Marseille). These cards will be used in rituals in which the cards are burned, destroyed, or left in specific locations.
Other useful decks:
- Ancient Italian Tarot (a Marseille-style deck, with very gorgeous and powerful art)
Minchiate decks are useful if you use, or plan to use astrology in your magic.
- The Minchiate Tarot: The 97-Card Tarot of the Renaissance, Complete with the 12 Astrological Signs and the 4 Elements (the most inexpensive Minchiate deck. Though the art is pretty meh, it is still useful.)
- Minchiate Al Cigno - Bologna 1775 CA.: Anima Antiqua (a much more attractive reproduction Minchiate deck)
Tiny Decks
- Tiny Universal Waite Tarot*: These will be used for crafting mojos and for carrying with you.Â
Required Reading
You should purchase this book (print preferred) or get them on loan from your library, as we will be referring to it throughout the course. Other readings will be sent via PDF.Â
- Tarot and Divination Cards: A Visual Archive by Laetitia Barbier. This may seem expensive, but it’s a steal at $36, as books of similar quality and production often sell for three times the price. If you can’t afford it at the beginning of the course, ask for it as a gift or just buy it when you can afford it. A real treasure and a beautiful coffee-table book that you will cherish and return to.
Recommended Reading
Not required to read in full, but recommended. I will be sharing excerpts from these texts throughout the course.
- A Short History of (Nearly) Everything Paranormal: Our Secret Powers: Telepathy, Clairvoyance and Precognition by Terje G. Simonsen. This is a terrific overview of paranormal experiences, with a focus on psi phenomena. The author uses far too many exclamation points, but the content is excellent and will give you a solid grounding.Â
- The Way of Tarot: The Spiritual Teacher in the Cards by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Marianna Costa (I will share excerpts from this book, but you should have a copy and read it—it rewards regular revisits).
- Cartomancy in Folk Witchcraft: Playing Cards and Marseille Tarot in Divination, Magic, and Lore by Roger J. Horne (Expanded Second Edition)
- Real Magic: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Science, and a Guide to the Secret Power of the Universe by Dean Radin
- Magical World of the Tarot: Fourfold Mirror of the Universe by Gareth Knight.Â
- A Deck of Spells: Hoodoo Playing Card Magic in Rootwork and Conjure by Professor Charles Porterfield. I absolutely love this book, and the Prof. is one of the most compelling speakers I’ve ever seen.Â
- SSOTBME Revised: An Essay on Magic by Ramsey Dukes
- Meditations on the Tarot: A Journey into Christian Hermeticism by Anonymous (Valentin Tomberg). Don't let the title put you off if you're not a Christian—there is deep wisdom in this book.
- Six Ways: Approaches and Entries for Practical Magic by Aidan Wachter
-
Weaving Fate: Hypersigils, Changing the Past, & Telling True Lies by Aidan Wachter
- The Inner Guide Meditation: A Spiritual Technology for the 21st Century by Edwin C. Steinbrecher
